Zentangle Pumpkin
When I asked you guys recently to suggest new crafts I could try, Rachael recommended Zentangle. I had never heard of such a thing, but when Chica and I looked into it, I discovered a whole new fun hobby. Zentangles are basically patterned doodles, and when applied in random styles, they create a really amazing effect. You can go with your own imagination and doodle whatever you want, but if you need a kick start (or some fresh new pattern ideas), there are plenty of Zentangle books out there that are full of inspiration.
Besides a surface and some sort of pattern, the only other tool you will need to get started is a permanent black marker. I really like using Sharpie Extreme markers for this project, because they offer fade-resistance that will help the pumpkin last several seasons.
Soon after learning about Zentangles, I was looking for a unique surface project to apply the Zentangle technique to. When I spotted some white pumpkins on sale at Michael's last Sunday, I knew I had my idea. I did a different design in each segment of the pumpkin, and I really like this alternate color theme for something as traditional as a pumpkin.

Your pumpkin turned out great!!
This is cool. How did I miss this? I'm off to check it out. Thanks as usual for sharing great ideas.
Absolutely love the pumpkin! Although I haven't done it, I am a fan of Zentangle and maybe this is a way to get into it! You should, if you haven't already, send a .gif of the pumpkin to the Zentangle people -- I'm sure they'd love it!
Love the pumpkin.
I just got a Zentangles book for my birthday this month and I think this is a great project for me to try! Thanks!
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I'm not a huge lover of halloween but this works for me :)
This pumpkin is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!! I think I am going to have to go looking for a white pumpkin of my own today.
The white pumpkin is so creative - I love it!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW FANTAST?C!!!
I have been thinking of how I can help my art students improve their writing skills, without doing just writing. I have decided to incorporate zentangle as much as possible in projects to make them really focus on making lines and controlling their writing utensil. Thanks for sharing. I love the pumpkins! So elegant!
i am a 81 year old and have only been doing zentangles for a short time, but am now addicted to them.
Your post on decorating pumpkins with sharpies just got indirectly plugged by Alton Brown on his Facebook page. I love it when bloggers get attention!
Matt, thanks for letting us know. Cool!
