Wizard of Oz Party Decor Ideas
We had so much fun recently throwing a Wizard of Oz themed party and our guests were delighted at the creative ways we showcased the elements of the movie in our tablescape. All it took was a little creativity and a couple trips to The Home Depot.
Here's a video showing the entire process of creating our Wizard of Oz party decor.
If you can't see the video, try viewing it directly on YouTube.
If you prefer step-by-step instructions, keep reading to see exactly how we created each of the big decor elements used in our Wizard of Oz party.
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" wall backdrop
For the main wall in the party space, we decided to make a giant rainbow as a nod to Dorothy's famous song from the movie, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". We started with some inexpensive plastic tablecloths from the Dollar Tree in the colors of the rainbow.
We hung the tablecloths on the wall and put a table up against it, which we covered with a perfectly emerald-colored green fabric tablecloth.
With the perfect canvas in place, we moved on to adding the fun decorative touches.
"Yellow Brick Road" table runner
We couldn't have a Wizard of Oz party without featuring the yellow brick road somewhere, and a table runner was the perfect way to do it. Rather than try to create the brick texture from scratch, we got a faux brick panel from The Home Depot and used a jigsaw to cut it down to size.
We made the panel about a foot wide and as long as our table. Then I grabbed a can of Rust-Oleum protective enamel in white to give it a basecoat.
Whenever we paint something dark with a light/bright color like yellow, we always like to start with a white basecoat. It makes the finish color show up so much better, with fewer coats.
To finish it off, I sprayed on a coat of glossy Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover in Sun Yellow.
And just like that, we've got a yellow brick road. So easy!
We put our yellow brick road right down the middle of the table
3D Emerald City backdrop with red poppy field
At the end of the yellow brick road, of course we had to have an Emerald City! We came up with a fun and easy way to create a 3D Emerald City backdrop out of PVC and fabric. Check out our full tutorial for details on how to make an Emerald City backdrop.
We propped up our DIY Emerald City in front of the rainbow and at the end of the yellow brick road. Perfection!
To mimic the poppy field that Dorothy and her friends walked through on their way to the Emerald City, we placed a couple dozen of our easy handmade paper poppies in front of the city, on either side of the road.
Wizard of Oz place settings
For the place settings, we used real dishes (rather than paper) but still found subtle ways to reflect the characters in the movie.
The chargers were a silver color that resembled the Tin Man, and the napkin rings were made from red sequinned ribbon to match Dorothy's shoes. Inside the napkin, we tucked a couple rainbow lollipops as a nod to the Lollipop Guild.
We added rainbow-colored flatware and served bright red punch to add another nod to those famous ruby slippers.
The tablescape was really coming together!
Centerpiece with Dorothy's Ruby Slippers and the Wicked Witch of the East
The final touch for our Wizard of Oz table was a centerpiece. We just had to get the Wicked Witch of the East in there somewhere, so I designed a quick printable image featuring her classic striped stockings and the ruby slippers, which originally came from her. Download our Witch Legs with Ruby Slippers image if you'd like to make your own.
After printing the image onto white cardstock and cutting it out, I added glue over the shoes and sprinkled on some red glitter to make them really pop.
Then I tucked them under a cute little basket just like Dorothy's, which I thought would be way cuter on a table than a crashed house would be.
I lined the basket with blue gingham to match Dorothy's dress and filled it with bread. Placed in the middle of the Yellow Brick Road, it made the perfect Wizard of Oz Centerpiece.
The complete Wizard of Oz party tablescape
We could not be more pleased with how this whole party came together.
The table came out exactly how we had planned, and is such a fun and bright nod to the Wizard of Oz movie.
The basket and witch legs might be my favorite part. Or is it the Emerald City? Or the Yellow Brick Road? I think it's ALL my favorite!
