12 Unique Christmas Tree Ideas
We love all types of Christmas trees, where they are traditional green, unusual colors, artificial, or real. We especially love creating unique Christmas tree decoration themes and creating fun tree shapes out of other materials.
Here is a collection I've pulled together for you of some of our favorite Christmas tree ideas from past years.
Trees made from upcycled window blinds
Remember when Chica made these tabletop Christmas trees out of a broken set of window blinds? She loves to upcycle and hates to waste anything, and that led to these charming trees. They're definitely the most unusual thing we have ever used to make Christmas decorations.
Ornament-covered tomato cage Christmas trees
Can you believe we used tomato cages as the framework for these outdoor ornament-covered Christmas trees? We covered them with lots of shatter-proof ornaments to create the gorgeous tree topiaries for Chica's front porch. They held up great to the elements and she can't wait to display them again this year.
String-and-lights tomato cage trees
We didn't stop there with decorating tomato cages... we also covered one with white yarn, strung up and down to create the tree shape. Then we tucked fairly lights inside to create an elegant tomato cage tree with string and lights that works great indoors or out.
Wood slice and resin miniature trees
We love a good resin project and we just adore the rustic yet still modern look of these mini trees we made from wood slices embedded in resin, which we cut to a tree shape. It seems so meta to use old tree parts to make a new tree!
Faux malachite trees
I especially love the swirled green look of malachite, but I'm often deterred by the hefty price tag. So I figured out a way to create faux malachite Christmas trees using a clever craft supply that makes the pyramid shape a piece of cake to create.
Upholstered fabric trees
We always over buy Christmas fabrics so we used up some leftovers to make these upholstered fabric Christmas trees. They are super simple to make in any size with any fabric, making them easy to suit any decor. And they are flat and lightweight, so they're easy to store after the holidays.
Modern rainbow tree forest
Satin fabric in a bright array of colors was the inspiration for my modern rainbow Christmas tree forest, which I made just by wrapping some paper mâché cones. They look so pretty in a large group on the mantle, especially in different sizes and colors.
Monochromatic tree with paint-dipped ornaments
We went totally minimal with our modern monochromatic mini tinsel tree decor, dressing it with paint-dipped ornaments. By keeping to a few shades of blue and an all white tree, we ended up with a perfectly simple, modern look.
Duct tape Christmas trees
The most versatile tool in our workshop also makes really good trees! We made our red and white striped duct tape Christmas trees with just a simple fold technique, applied over and over to a cone shape.
"Blue Christmas" Elvis tree
We had a great time making this Elvis-themed blue Christmas tree for my aunt, who is a huge fan of The King. That blue tree was the perfect inspiration for some rock-n-roll ornaments and a unique message garland.
Azorean Portuguese tile tree
For Chica's mom, we created this truly unique Portuguese tile inspired Christmas tree that celebrates the traditions and colors of the Azores, where she was born. It's full of handmade touches, from the painted tile ornaments to the custom tree topper and collar.
Pink carousel tree
We brought such whimsy and delight to this pink tree when we decorated it as a pink carousel Christmas tree, complete with sparkly tent topper, shiny poles, and festive carousel horses. Those bright pastel ornaments brought the perfect touch of cheer to this truly unique tree that's perfect for a nursery or little girl's room.
