Thanksgiving Kids' Table Game
This year, I decided to make a fun game for the kids to play while waiting on the turkey to finish cooking for Thanksgiving. I wanted it to be easy to learn, quick to play, and colorful enough to coordinate with my kid table's decor. I decided to make a fall version of one of our family's favorite games, "Left Center Right".
I started with a set of our small wooden bowls with wooden acorns from our store. With six bowls and 20 acorns, this is enough pieces for six players with three acorns per bowl, as well as two extra in case you lose a piece.
Paint the bowls
I grabbed some craft paint in a color palette that matched the plates I planned to use at dinner. I painted the insides only of the six bowls, each one a different color.
Paint the acorn tops
Using the same colors, I painted just the caps of the acorns, to keep that half-painted, half-natural wood look that the bowls had. I painted three acorns in each of my six colors.
Make dice from wooden blocks
This game requires three dice, which I made using small wooden blocks painted with the three of the colors from my palette.
To finish off the dice, I used a black permanent marker to mark three of the sides with the letters L, C, and R, and dots on the remaining three sides.
A quick spray of sealer gave the pieces a protective coat and a pretty shine, and they were ready for the table.
How to play Left-Center-Right:
- Give three acorns to each player.
- Roll as many dice as you have acorns, up to three.
- For each L or R rolled, give one acorn to the player to your left or right. For each C rolled, put an acorn in the center. Rolling a dot means you keep your acorn.
- Pass the dice to your left for the next player's turn.
- Even if you run out of acorns during your turn, you're still in the game because the other players might end up passing you their acorns during their rolls.
- The winner is the last player with acorns left.
