Silhouette Reading Lamp
I really loved the look I got when I created the cityscape silhouette lampshade for my kitchen work desk, so I decided to make another silhouette lampshade, this time with a reading-themed "Once Upon a Time" silhouette, for a lamp in MiniMe's room.
I used my Silhouette machine to cut the phrase out of black scrapbook paper. I'm sharing the cut file with you, but in case you do not have a cutting machine, I'm also sharing a JPG file that you can print onto cardstock and cut out by hand.

Once I had my piece cut out, I just used a little spray adhesive on the front of the letters and pressed it onto the inside of the lamp shade. Super simple!
I love how it looks so ordinary when it's off but then turns magical when she turns it on to read a good book!

Super cool idea! I think I'll try this in my son's room with a Transformer Autobot symbol. =)
How fun is that! This is perfect for the lamp in my daughter's new princess room. Thanks!
This is a great idea. I am getting started on this project right away. Thank you for sharing!
What a fantastic idea. I want to do this!
Thanks so much!
With the heat from the light bulb, how well does the stencil stick and stay stuck LONG TERM to the lamp shade?
Sue I haven't had any problem with the words sticking, but your results will vary depending on the material your lampshade is made of, the weight of the paper you use, and how much and what type of glue you apply.
I just made this lampshade to go on a lamp my husband made out of old books. It was such a perfect fit and we put the lamp on an old school desk as a side table in my 2 daughters room. I love it and thank you so much for the idea and stencil. I pinned my picture on pinterest and copied the link to your page so you can get credit for the awesome idea. (I hope that was okay) LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Jennie, that sounds gorgeous! We love that you pinned it, and thanks for adding a link to our page :)
I am going to do this along with some vintage pictures of my Grandparents glued to the sides of the shade. This lamp will sit on top of a cupboard that I have decopodged two pictures of my parents on.
Hi Jo I think this is a fab idea. I am going to make a lamp with a harry potter quote, would you be able to advise me as I am not the most artistic :)
Ho my god, thank you so much for the PDF of the writtin template !!
Beautiful 'Once upon a Time' Lampshade girls - given me much inspiration. Thank you. Warm Wishes from freezing Southeast Aussie! Brrrrrrrrr!
Thank you (and Pinterest) for this wonderful idea. I made it for a floor lamp that the base is a big stack of books. It will be in my grand-daughter"s "Once Upon a Time" themed nursery.
Launa, that sounds lovely!
Thank you for the idea! I am making this for my son's nursery. :) Quick question, did you have any problems with the paper burning at all? That's the only thing I'm worried about. I'm using cardstock and spray adhesive.
Kay, we did not have any issues with the paper burning. We recommend using a low wattage bulb to be extra safe.
Can,you use vinyl paper
Lisa, we haven't tried with vinyl, but we suspect that the warmth of the bulb might make the adhesive lose its stickiness after a while. If you try it out, let us know how it goes.
I agree with you.... after i put some thought to it i dont think the vinyl would work good either. .. so you used scrapbook paper rigjt and thank you! ! !
Hi! Could you tell me the name of the font you used? Thanks a lot.
Alex, we used a design from the Storybrook Cricut cartridge.
Hi Chica, I love this! I just got a new Cricut Explore Air two days ago. Is there a special file that you can provide so that I can cut this using my Cricut? Thanks for posting this idea....and I think your blog is fantastic!
Thanks, Vickie! Jo made this using the Storybook Cricut cartridge.
How or where should I get the stencil or silhouette? I'd really love to make this?
Bonnie, here's a download link to the template. You can print it out on card stock and then cut it out. You can scale the size to fit your lamp.
