Sheet Music Candlelight Luminaria Valentine's Decor
To decorate the top of my piano for Valentine's Day, I decided to make inexpensive luminarias that display sheet music from songs that are meaningful to me and my husband. With a softly glowing candle inside, this easy DIY luminaria also makes a great a wedding reception centerpiece or decoration for an anniversary party, birthday party and more. Just customize your colors and what you print on the vellum to match your occasion.
Start with three 5"x7" frames, which you can pick up at your local dollar store, often for only one dollar each. Remove the backing from each frame and discard them. (Or stash them away in case you want to disassemble the luminarias later and turn them back into frames.)
If you want to change the frame color, a simple spritz with some spray paint will quickly do the trick.
You will need a 5"x7" piece of translucent vellum paper for each frame. You can use regular white vellum here, or a pretty printed vellum. Print your sheet music (or whatever design you like) onto the vellum.
For best results, print the design in REVERSE on the vellum, and put the paper in the frame so that the printed side is on the inside. This will give the design a soft glow and keep the black ink from being so stark on the paper. Cut your sheet music out to fit inside your frame, using the glass as a guide for centering and cutting.
Put the glass back in the frame and secure it with a touch of glue. Add the printed vellum and again secure with glue.
Now to join the three frames together! Cut three pieces of 3/4" wide ribbon to about 1 inch shorter than your frame is tall. The thinner the material that the ribbon is made of, the better it will work, because you want it to be able to fold easily. In other words, don't use fancy, thick satin or grosgrain ribbon, because it won't be easy to work with.
Lay two frames side by side and lay a ribbon down along the seam between the two. Use a hot glue gun to attach the ribbon to both frames, half on each one, so that the ribbon acts as a hinge.
Lay the third frame next to the first two and use the same ribbon/glue technique to attach it. Put one more ribbon on the other side of that last frame, then stand it up and start to form a triangle.
Use more glue to attach the other side of the last ribbon onto the other frame, forming a complete triangle.
If you want to dress up the luminaria, you can add some additional embellishments in the groove where the frames meet. I used some pretty adhesive wrap from the Dollar Tree that is meant to be used on candle holders but when I cut it down to size, it worked great here.
All that's left is to add a battery-operated flickering LED candle inside and you have a beautifully glowing piece of decor perfect for any romantic occasion.
