Printable Sandcastle Flags and Pirate Flags
Our yearly beach vacation in Sanibel, Florida was a few weeks ago, and as usual, I spent several hours of that week on the beach with shovels and buckets, making sandcastles. Whenever I make a sandcastle, I usually find myself wishing I had something to use as a flag for the top. I always tell myself that I should make some ahead of time. Well, this year I did just that, and I was finally prepared with sandcastle flags!
To make it easy to re-use year after year (and so we could share it with you), I made a template. Our downloadable Sandcastle Flag printable has two pages — one is in full color, and the other is just the outlines, for those who want to color their own flags.
To make your flags, start by printing the template onto regular white paper. Then grab some scissors, a handful of toothpicks and/or wooden skewers, and adhesive of some sort (I used a tape runner.
Cut out all the flags you want to use. There are bright rainbow colors and softer pastel colors to choose from, and even a couple Jolly Roger flags in case your sandcastle gets overtaken by pirates!
Apply adhesive to the back of each flag, making sure to get plenty in the middle, where the toothpick or skewer will go.
Place the pick in the middle...
...then fold the flag in half, pinching it around the toothpick and pressing the two sides together.
And just like that, you have a bunch of adorable little sandcastle flags!
I love the bright colors, but the Jolly Roger sandcastle flags might be my favorite.
Once we got to the beach and I made my first sandcastle, I was thrilled to be able to pop the little flags at the tops of the towers, for instant charm.
It wasn't long, though, before the pirates attacked and raised the Jolly Roger!
If you don't have a beach in your future, you can use these flags for more than just sandcastles. You could use them as cupcake picks or make the most charming appetizer toothpicks ever. You could even personalize them with children's names or the name of your favorite baseball team.
