Rainbow Kid's Bathroom Art from Painted Toy Ducks
I wanted to make a colorful and fun piece of art for my nieces' bathroom. Right now, they are obsessed with ducks since they have some ducklings on their farm. I also wanted to incorporate their love of rainbows, so that was my color palette.
I ordered some plastic toy ducks and picked out a rainbow of spray paint colors from ColorShot (available exclusively at Home Depot)
Step 1: Spray paint the ducks rainbow colors
The easy-use cans and fun colors of ColorShot paint made it a breeze to paint the ducks. Quick tip: to make coverage easier, use the lighter spray paint colors on the lighter ducks and the darker colors on the darker ones.
Step 2: Build a simple shadowbox frame
After laying the ducks out to see how I wanted to arrange them, I used some simple 1x2 pine to build a shadowbox frame the right size to hold the arranged ducks. I used plenty of wood glue on the mitered corners and secured each corner with my brad nailer. Then I clamped it all until it was dry. I also cut a thin piece of lauan to size for the back, and painted it white.
After nailing the lauan to the back of the frame, I painted the frame white to match.
Step 3: Add the ducks to the shadowbox
I double-checked my color arrangement and lined everything up carefully, spacing the ducks evenly. Then it was time to mount the ducks in the shadowbox.
I added a big dollop of hot glue at the widest part of the duck.
Then I set the duck in its spot and held it in place until it was fully cooled and set.
When they were all glued on, I definitely had "all my ducks in a row"!
A quick hook on the back and this colorful art was ready to hang. My nieces absolutely loved this new addition to their bathroom!
