At one time or another, we've all ended up with a block of hard brown sugar that we can't use. If you're not in a hurry to get it softened, there's a super easy way to fix it so that it's ready for you the next time you need it.

  • Put your brown sugar in an airtight container.
  • Fold a piece of aluminum foil until it's small enough to fit inside the container
  • Fold a paper towel or napkin until it's slightly smaller than the foil
  • Get the paper towel damp (but not dripping wet) and place it on top of the foil
  • Put the foil/towel on top of the sugar, folding the corners if needed to make it fit.
  • Close the container tightly.
  • In a day or two, your sugar will be as good as new!

I keep the foil and napkin in my container all the time. Whenever I use some sugar and find that it's getting a little hard, I add some water to the napkin so that the sugar will be ready to go the next time I need it.

This is a good idea but I use a slice of bread on the top of the brown sugar to keep it from getting hard or even afterwards you can add a slice of bread to the top of the air tight container that you store it in. I ususally use the heal because it is the least favorite piece of bread in the loaf. At my house it usually just gets tossed in the trash because nobody wants to eat it, so I just toss it in on top of my brown sugar container.

I tried this trick earlier this evening and my brown sugar is already soft again!

I made some cookies-in-a-jar and the brown sugar was stuck to the bottom. A super quick tip is to microwave a little brown sugar for about 10 - 15 seconds; it softened up enough to mix.

The best thing to do is cut a slice of apple and add it to the jar or bag of sugar. it instantly softens it. within an hour or two depending on how hard it is. and the best part is the apple just shrivels up and doesnt rot.
