Owl Upcycled Wood Candle Holders
One of my favorite ways to decorate for the holidays is with light, and candles are an easy and inexpensive way to add holiday warmth to any home. I love creating unique holders to match the season and our decor, and this year I wanted to create something rustic and a little quirky for my mantle. I decided to upcycle some wood from my scrap pile, and chose some nice chunky 4x4 posts. They were the perfect start to a salvaged wood project, and just needed a little paint and imagination.
The first step was cutting the wood. I used my mitre saw to trim the 4x4 post down into five pieces of varying lengths.
I wanted to add a hole to each one for a tea light to sit later, but unfortunately I didn't have a drill bit that was wide enough. So I first used a 2" hole saw attachment on my Ryobi drill to cut the outside of the hole, going down about an inch and a half into the wood.
Then I used the largest drill bit I had (1") to get most of the wood out of the middle.
There was still a ring of wood left, so I just tackled that with a screwdriver and hammer, chipping away until the hole was clean enough for the candle to fit inside.
Jo helped me out by sanding the surface and rounding the corners for a worn look.
I tested the candles to be sure they fit in the holes, and then it was time to get creative!
We spray painted each block a different color, using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover in Midnight Blue, Aqua, Lagoon, Paprika, and Vintage Teal.
My chunky candle holders were perfectly pretty, and just needed the quirky touch I was looking for. We found just the right thing with some wooden, laser-cut owls and tree branches from Hobby Lobby. We lined them up on the candle holders, trimming when necessary, and hot glued them in place.
I popped the tea lights in and that was it! These rustic, wooden candle holders look great in my winter decor, and I especially love how the non-traditional holiday colors give such a warm feel.
