Modern DIY Rainbow Christmas Trees
To decorate my mantel in a unique, modern Christmas theme this year, I decided to make a forest of brightly colored Christmas trees. All it took was satin fabric in a rainbow of colors and some papier mâché cones in different sizes. What a glorious result from such simple materials!
To cover the cones, I first made a paper template for each size of cone. Then I traced that template multiple times onto sheets of thin copy paper, once for each one, and cut them out.
To make it easier to apply the flimsy satin fabric on the cones, I gave it stability by gluing it onto those paper pieces I just cut out. I gave the paper a good coat of spray adhesive.
Then I stuck the paper to the back side of the fabric and waited for it to dry.
I cut the fabric around the paper template, making sure to leave a fabric border around the bottom of the paper so that you I had some excess to turn under for a finished edge later.
I added more spray adhesive to the cone, then wrapped the fabric around, tucking that excess in the bottom and sticking it to the inside. This made such a nice, smooth cone!
I continued with more cones and colors, until I had a rainbow forest ready to for my modern Christmas decorations.
You can use any type of fabric to cover the cones, but I love how the shiny satin looks really chic and expensive. Clustered together or lined up, they certainly make a festive statement.
