Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas
Mini Me just turned four and she told me in no uncertain terms that she wanted purple mermaids for her birthday. Chica was nice enough to hold the event at her house, since she has a pool, and, of course she also made the cake. Here's how it turned out!
The cake table was the main focus of party decoration. I went with the requested purple theme and added a bit of aqua to balance it out. I made the ribbon garland by simply tying different styles and lengths of ribbon to a long white satin ribbon. I had originally planned to hang it on the front of the table but I thought it looked much better hanging on the wall behind.
The gorgeous wooden mermaid propped on the table comes from one of my new favorite Etsy sellers, Haven
America. They offer many wooden cutout designs, and this mermaid was perfect for the table.
Of course, every party must have its favors! I put snacks in turquoise and purple treat bags that came from Shop Sweet Lulu, another favorite source of mine for party supplies. We used our Silhouette electronic cutter to cut mermaids tags out of cardstock, then tied them to the front of the bags.
I served grape punch in Mason jars topped with daisy cutout lids and striped straws.
Chica did an outstanding job making a purple and turquoise ombre cake for Mini Me. She added ripple after ripple of frosting (using a rose petal tip) and added more food coloring to it every few rows to make a gradual effect.
For the topper, she made a batch of our hard candy and poured it over a bowl full of ice cubes. After the ice melted away, the candy looked just like coral!

I've searched and searched.... how did you make that amazing candy topper?! Love the party decor and the cake, so much that I'm duplicating what I can in 3 days! Hooray! Thanks for the inspiration ?
A.Davis, we're so glad you like our ideas. To make the candy topper, I first filled a narrow, tall bowl with ice cubes, then mixed up a batch of our hard candy recipe and poured it over the ice. The candy dripped down in between, cooling as it went, and created the look of coral.
I'm in love with the ribbon garland! I'm wondering what colors you used to create this and where you purchased of all the ribbon? Thanks!!
Molly, I found all the ribbon at Michaels and I used various shades of aqua and purple.
Where did you get the mason jars from?
Julie, the jars came from our local grocery store, but we got the fancy lids here on Amazon.

Amanda, the mermaid was made by the Etsy shop named Slippin' Southern.
