IKEA Hack: Sola Wood Flower Resin End Table
On a recent IKEA outing, I was inspired by simple clean lines of the GLADOM tray table. With its round tabletop and raised sides, I knew it would be perfect for holding resin. I decided right away to hack this GLADOM and turn it into something lovely.
I love Sola wood flowers and thought they would look great inside the table. I had plenty of minis on hand, and decided to fill the tray completely with them. It would be a perfect decor piece for the home as well as for my brother's upcoming wedding.
To secure the flowers into the table, I added a drop of hot glue to the bottom of each one and pressed it in place.
I kept going until the entire tray was filled with flowers. In addition to a bunch of minis, I ended up using a few bigger flowers as well. I love how the assortment looks.
I wanted to darken the color of the flowers just a bit to give them more depth. Since these flowers are made from wood, I simply used my Wagner heat gun to brown them up a little bit. If you do this BE VERY CAREFUL, as these wood flowers can easily catch on fire!
With the flowers set, I was finally ready to start adding the resin. I mixed up a batch of about 10 ounces of TotalBoat MakerPoxy and stirred it thoroughly according to the package directions.
I poured it over the flowers and used the heat gun to gently warm it so that it flowed easily between the flowers. Since MakerPoxy can't be poured too deep at once, I kept this layer pretty thin.
I continued with more thin layers of epoxy, letting each one set up before adding the next, to ensure it cured properly. By the time I was done, I ended up using almost a whole gallon to fill the table.
Once the table was filled, a few of the flowers were a bit too tall and therefore popped up above the table line. I used my Ryobi sander to knock down the higher parts of the petals.
Sanding your shiny resin can be fairly scary, because it leads to a hazy, dusty mess. I always feel like I have ruined my piece by sanding it, but I know it's a necessary step to get the finish I want.
Resin is so forgiving and clears up any sanded roughness like magic. The final top coat of resin makes everything shiny and beautiful again! I used my gloved finger to make sure the top coat made it all the way to the edge of the table without leaking over the edge.
When it was all settled and cured, it was so beautiful. Just look at that gorgeous finish!
This flower-filled resin table is going to be perfect for holding the card box at my brother's wedding reception.
And when the wedding is over, it will work great in my guest room.
These delicate wood flowers, combined with the durable resin finish, make this table a great addition for a little girl's room, too. You could paint the table a soft pastel first and either keep the flowers neutral or even dye them any color before placing them into the table.
