How to Make a Wreath Sash (Tutorial with Video)
A wreath is the perfect way to decorate your front door and welcome guests, and a wreath sash is a great way to accessorize it.
Wreath sashes are also easy to make, and I'm going to show you how to sew your own.
What is a wreath sash?
Wreath sashes are long bands of fabric that you tie to your wreath in a simple knot, allowing the tails of the sash to hand down. Linen sashes are the most common, but you can use other fabrics to add a little color to your seasonal decor.
Whether your wreath is part of your regular home decor or special holiday decor, a sash is the perfect touch to finish it off.
There are many sources for purchasing wreath sashes online, such as these linen wreath sashes from Amazon or the numerous Etsy options that you can order with a monogram of your choice.
But it turns out that making a wreath sash yourself is quite easy, and it makes a great sewing project for a beginner. I'm going to show you how!

How to make a wreath sash
We're going to make a wreath sash that's 52" long and 4.5" wide, which is the most common size I've seen available. You can use any fabric you like, but keep in mind that super thick fabrics will be more difficult to sew.
Step 1: Cut the fabric
You will need two pieces of fabric that are 52.5" long and 5" wide, which will give you a 1/4" seam allowance for the finished 52" x 4.5" sash.
To create the angled tails, fold your strips of fabric in half crosswise, line up all four ends, and cut them at a 45" angle.
Step 2: Sew the edges
Make sure your two fabric pieces are right sides together, and stitch around the edges to sew them together. Don't go ALL the way around, though...
As you sew, be sure to leave a small gap open so that you can flip the piece inside out.
Step 3: Turn the piece inside out
Using the gap you created, turn your sewn sash inside out so that the pretty side of the fabric is now on the outside.
Use a pencil to poke the ends of the tails from the inside to help you get the points out.
Step 4: Press the seams
To get a nice look on your finished sash, it's critical that you iron it flat. This will make your sewn edges look crisp, and remove any wrinkles from how the fabric was originally folded.
Step 5: Close the gap
To close up that gap you left in the stitching, you can sew it by hand, or you can use my shortcut method: a little bit of heat-activated hemming tape, tucked inside and ironed down, will close that gap right up seamlessly.
The finished sash
That's really all there is to it! Your DIY wreath sash is now complete and ready to tie onto your wreath.
Personalizing your wreath sash
The most common way to personalized a wreath sash is with a custom monogram. This can be accomplished with an embroidery design, or you can even use paint and stencils to create a monogrammed sash.
Your choice of fabric is also a great way to give your wreath sash some personality. A bold pattern or print will add an unexpected pop of color to your wreath.
Unique ideas for wreath sashes
Besides the numerous options for the holiday season, a wreath sash can suit many occasions. A personalized wreath sash makes a great housewarming gift for someone who has purchased a new home. It's also a fun way to announce the birth of a child or welcome guests to a baby shower. Even birthday parties can be made more special with a wreath sash that greets your guests at the door.
