No-sew Rustic Fringed Tablecloth for a Party
We hosted a rustic, country themed baby shower last weekend, and wanted to give the main table a dramatic look featuring faded blues. We used dyed muslin, torn into strips, to create a gorgeous fringed cover for the table, turning it from blah into the center of attention.
Step 1: Dye the fabric blue
We chose muslin to create this tablecloth, because we would need a lot of it and muslin is very affordable. However, it wasn't the right color, so our first step was to dye it. We chose a bottle of Rit Dye's denim blue color and dyed several yards of muslin in the utility sink.
Step 2: Cut wide strips of fringe
Once the fabric was all dry, we cut it into 10" wide strips that were the same length as the front and sides of the table we would be covering. Then we cut little notches about every inch or so along the length of each strip.
To create the fringe, we tore each notch almost all the way across, leaving just an inch or two un-torn so that it would all stay together as a long fringed piece.
Step 3: Cover the table top
We used more dyed muslin to cover the top and sides of the table to create a solid base. Then we attached our fringe strips in horizontal rows to the base using hot glue. We started at the bottom and worked our way up, overlapping the layers a couple inches to hide the non-fringe portions. We covered the front of the table first, then worked on the sides. Since our table would be against the wall, we didn't bother to cover the back.
The finished fringed table cloth
When all the sides were covered, we had the most delightful fringed table cover. We love the rustic, casual look it gave to the table.
This fringed tablecloth was a very inexpensive way to add a lot of flair to a party table. And because it starts with ordinary muslin and fabric dye, you could do any color you want to match your party scheme. It would look really neat to an ombre effect on the layers, or even use alternating colors such as red and green for a Christmas party.
