I've started preparing for the huge outdoor event my family always holds on Independence Day weekend, and that means I'll need plenty of easy Fourth of July decorations. This year I made some fun pennants out of red, white, and blue felt. Not only is this an inexpensive patriotic decoration for the Fourth, but it's also a great craft project for the kids to help with before or even during the party.

The supplies are pretty simple and inexpensive. Of course you'll need a bunch of felt sheets in red, white, and blue. You'll also need some thin ribbon to string them with, scissors for cutting the felt, and a hot glue gun for attaching the pieces. You can also use kid-friendly felt glue but don't try to use regular white school glue, because it won't work on felt.

If you never liked high school geometry, you might find the prospect of cutting triangles without a pattern to be daunting. However, I've got an easy way to do it! Start by making a long, straight cut across the rectangular felt sheet, from corner to corner. (You might find that a rotary cutter and mat saves you a lot of time and energy over regular scissors.)

Now put one half of the felt so that the point is facing down and cut the top part off so that you have a nice even triangle.

Do the same for the half, and you'll have two large triangles for your pennants. The minimal waste left over makes perfect scraps for decorating the pennants.

Cut a whole bunch of these triangles in red, white, and blue felt. Be sure to save the scraps so you can decorate with them.

Now it's time for the fun part! Using the leftover scraps, cut stripes, stars, circles, or whatever shapes you like. Use the hot glue gun or to stick the shapes to your pennants.

This is a fun and inexpensive kids' summer activity, and they will love getting creative to create fun decorations for the July 4th party.

Once all your pennants are decorated and the glue has set/dried, you can string them on the ribbon. Start by running a bead of hot glue on the top edge of the pennant, on the back, and stick the ribbon to it. Continue to glue pennants onto the ribbon, leaving a few inches between each one.

Once you've glued the pennants to the ribbon, it's ready to hang to decorate your party space.

These pennants are a fun addition to any Independence Day party decorations, and are easy and fun to make.

Hi. What size felt sheets did you use for this project? I love this and they turned out so beautifully.

CoCo, I used standard felt sheets that you can get in the craft store. I believe they measure 9"x12".
