Demogorgon Placemat for a Stranger Things Party
When we threw a Stranger Things party recently, our favorite party decorations were the Demogorgon placemats we made out of felt. They made such a huge impact and made the tablescape unmistakably Stranger Things.
To make it as easy as we could for you to create your own, we created a Demogorgon placemat pattern to help you cut out the pieces of felt.
We recommend printing a couple copies of the petal pattern to make pinning easier, but one copy of the circle should be enough.
Pin the petal patterns onto some tan felt, spacing them to maximize how many you can fit on a sheet, then cut them out.
You'll need five tan petals for each placemat.
When you have all your petals cut out, trim the extra border off your pattern piece, making it a little smaller.
Then use that smaller petal pattern to cut out petals from dark red or burgundy felt. Again, you'll need five of these for each placemat.
Run a bead of Aleene's Tacky Glue around the edge of the red petal...
...then stick it onto the tan petal, positioning it so that the tan border shows on all the rounded edges (but not the flat edge at the bottom).
Then use the round pattern to cut out a circle from black felt. You'll need one circle per placemat.
With all the pieces cut, it's time to get painting. Get some white craft paint (I used Americana Multi-Surface paint) and a round paint brush (I used a #2) and load the brush up fully with paint.
Touch the brush to the surface of the felt, and press down so the bristles are flat against the felt. Lift it straight up to reveal a pointed oval shape resembling a watermelon seed.
Continue this technique around the petal, making sure to fully load the brush with paint for every single spot, for a consistent application.
Fill in the center with more paint spots until it's covered nicely. Do this for all five petals.
Use the same technique to apply a row of white dots around the edges of the black circle.
When the paint has dried, arrange the five petals into a star shape, letting each one slightly overlap the one next to it.
Position the circle in the middle, and adjust the pieces if needed to be sure there are no gaps.
Use more Tacky Glue to adhere the pieces together and leave it flat to dry.
Just look at that amazing Demogorgon placemat we created with such simple materials!
This is sized to fit a standard dinner plate with most of the petals sticking out from underneath.
And of course, we couldn't resist serving Eggo waffles at our Stranger Things party.
These DIY felt Demogorgon placemats made the perfect addition to our Stranger Things table decor. Be sure to check our our full Stranger Things party ideas post for more party decor.
