Christmas Advent Calendar for a Crafter or DIYer
Chica and I love Advent calendars. We have made many different versions over the years and enjoy gifting them to others or using them again ourselves. This year, I wanted to surprise Chica with an Advent calendar filled with her favorite things — craft supplies! The best part of this one is that it starts with a 24 drawer organizer she can reuse in her craft room!
It doesn't look very Christmas-y right now so I picked a pad of festive papers from Hobby Lobby to decorate it with. You can use whatever patterns you like to fit your holiday decor.
Picking the paper first makes it a lot easier to select your color palette. I selected several colors of paint that coordinated with the paper.
I removed the drawers and used spray paint to cover the industrial-looking black plastic frame.
I wanted Chica to be able to use this in her craft room after Christmas so I picked some fun colors to add some flair to the handles. I chose a Multi-Surface paint since the drawers are plastic.
Since I picked four colors, I did six drawers in each and set them aside to cure for a few days.
See how cute the organizer is?
Now, it is time to make it into an Advent calendar, but only temporarily. I cut strips of paper as wide as the drawer and taped the top to the inside of the drawer.
Then I wrapped the paper loosely around the front of the drawer, and used more tape to adhere the other end of the paper to the bottom of the drawer.
Then it's a matter of filling the drawer with a crafty treat of choice and sliding it back in to the unit.
An Advent calendar has to have some numbers or there isn't any countdown! I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut numbers to size out of red card stock.
To make my life easier, I used my Xyron sticker machine to make the numbers into stickers.
I put numbers on the drawers and I was all set!
I love how all the papers work together. Those scrapbook paper pads make this so easy.
Each drawer is filled with some fun crafting supplies for Chica.
As she opens each drawer, she can easily remove the paper from the drawer fronts and replace the clear drawer.
It really is the perfect gift for those DIYers in your life. This is a great option for men as well if you color it with more manly colors and fill it with items for the garden, garage, woodworking, or even computer parts like McGeeky would want.
