Chippendale Style Nightstand Modern Makeover
My mom told me she needed a new nightstand for her bedroom, so I started scouring thrift shops and yard sales for the perfect fixer-upper. When I came across a four-drawer, Chippendale-style nightstand for a song at a local yard sale, I snapped it up right away. It was dated but in perfect shape, so I brought it home to give it a modern makeover.
That dated hardware had to go! After removing it, I filled in the holes with wood filler and then sanded the drawer fronts to get them ready for paint.
After wiping down the sanding dust, I used my HomeRight FinishMax paint sprayer to apply two coats of a plum colored chalk paint over the whole thing. What a remarkable transformation that new color made!
This nightstand would be going next to my mom's bed, and will get lots of use, so I decided to protect the surface with a sealer. I applied two coats of satin varnish over the paint, again using my paint sprayer. I absolutely love how smooth the finish is when you use a sprayer to apply varnish.
I used the popular masking tape trick to make installing the new drawer pulls easier. (Apply tape over the back of the handle, mark the holes, then remove the tape and center it on the drawer.) With the hole marks lined up perfectly, I was able to drill straight through the tape to make the new holes for my handles.
The sleek brass pulls look great against that plum colored paint and they make the nightstand so modern.
I can hardly believe the transformation, from dated old brown to glorious new plum. It's amazing what a little paint can do.
I dunno, I kind of like this piece staged in my living room but I suppose I will go ahead and give it to my mom!
