Chinese Dragon Flea Market Chest
On a recent vacation, McGeeky and I spent a morning checking out a local flea market. Much to his chagrin, I found a tiny chest to redo and I am certain it will fit into our car for the trip home. I loved the size and style of it, but was not a fan of the design and color.
I wanted to cover the dated floral insert with some new fabric, and I wanted to make a template for it. I was working with limited supplies on vacation, so I had to get clever — I used a paper grocery sack taped together!
Before cutting my fabric (which I picked up at Three Crafty Ladies) I coated it with decoupage and allowed it to dry fully. This step keeps the fabric from fraying when you cut it.
While the fabric was drying, I spray painted the chest a vibrant pink. I wanted it to have a lacquer look when finished, so I used a gloss paint.
Finally, I cut the fabric to size and used more decoupage to glue it to the insert. I absolutely love the finished result!
Instead of being drab and dated, the chest is now bright and colorful, with a modern Asian flair to it. I coated the top completely with the decoupage but I think I might top it with a piece of plexiglass when I return home, to make it more durable.
