Caramel Apple and Pecan Crescent Rolls
I love shortcuts, and I bet you do, too. Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are one of my favorite go-to sides for a quick dinner or snack, and I love to stuff them with various flavorings. The other day, I was trying to come up with a unique dessert filling for them, and poked around my pantry until I found a package of caramel apple wraps, and inspiration struck! These flat circles of caramel are great for making no-mess, kid-friendly caramel apples, but I realized they would also be great for rolling up in a crescent roll. Two quick cuts through the wax paper with my kitchen shears, and they were the perfect size.
Caramel is great on its own, but I came up with two ideas for adding even more punch to these dessert crescent rolls. The first was a caramel apple pie, for which I diced an apple and quickly sauteed it in butter until a little bit soft. The second was a salted caramel pecan filling, with chopped pecans and sea salt.
I unrolled the crescent rolls onto a piece of parchment paper, topped each with a triangle of caramel, and added the filling. For the apple version, I put a heaping spoon of apple at the fat end of the triangle, then sprinkled on some brown sugar.
For the pecan version, I added a pile of chopped pecans and sprinkled it with salt.
I rolled them up carefully, tucking the dough's point under on the bottom.
Finally, I sprinkled a little brown sugar on top, and they were ready to bake.
I baked them according to the tube directions, and they were golden, gooey, and delicious.
My favorite was the pecan version, with the flaky layers of caramel bread dotted with crunchy pecans. Jo's favorite was the apple-filled version, which tasted just like a hot caramel apple. So delicious!
