Bedroom with Accent Wall and Wallpapered Tray Ceiling
After spending so much time fixing up other areas of my home, I decided it was finally time to redecorate my bedroom. And I'm so glad I did, because I couldn't be happier with the results!
I gave it color and texture with a blue accent wall. I gave it comfort with a new bed and linens. And I gave it a real "wow" moment with a wallpapered tray ceiling.
BEFORE: A boring, ordinary bedroom
How long should a person live with a bedroom they don't like before finally making it personal and beautiful? For me, it was 19 years. Sure, I did paint the vinyl headboard that one time, but I never put more more into this drab, plain, room.
Painting and wallpapering the tray ceiling
Like any good project process, I started at the top — the ceiling. I had always wanted to do something special with the tray ceiling in our room, but could never decide on the right design to start with.
I decided to go bold by adding wallpaper to the ceiling, and I found this gorgeous Bordado (Dusk) Wallpaper by Graham & Brown. It's bold and somehow subtle at the same time, and I love the various blues and the soft pink accents.
I pulled three shades of blue (light, medium, dark) out of the wallpaper and used two of them on the ceiling.
The lightest shade of blue went onto the vertical surface of the tray ceiling. I was lucky I didn't have to worry about taping the edges because the other paint and wallpaper would be covering it.
For the outer/lower ceiling portion, I used the medium blue paint. Overhead painting is not easy on the neck and arms, so I used an extra wide 18" paint roller frame to make this work go as quickly as possible.
I love how the two shades of blue work together on the two surfaces. It gives the tray more depth and adds more character to the tray ceiling overall.
Then it was time to add the wallpaper, and WOW did this make a huge difference in the room! Especially when I replaced that old ceiling fan with a new, modern one.
I chose the Warehouse of Tiffany Bairre gold chandelier light fixture, a fan/chandelier combo (a.k.a. "Fandelier") that looks pretty and provides amazing air circulation.
Adding an accent wall behind the bed
The wallpaper had a big impact on the ceiling, but the real star of this room makeover is the accent wall we installed behind the bed.
I wanted something grand and luxe, and picture frame moulding (box moulding) was a natural fit. However, I didn't want the same old boring rectangle design.
So I came up with a unique panel design that features faceted inner shapes that give drama that's missing from your typical box trim.
Implementing this design on the wall took a ton of planning and careful measurement, and you can read all the details in our step-by-step tutorial for installing a box trim moulding accent wall.
We used some trim moulding from Weaber Lumber to create seven panels across the wall, with a wide, flat board across the top to trim out the overall space.
After filling all the holes, sanding, and caulking both sides of every single trim piece (yes, that took quite a while!) I painted it with the darkest shade of blue that I had selected from the wallpaper colors.
Just look at this gorgeous accent wall! I was so thrilled that I almost didn't want to put the bed back in front of it.

Creating a cozy space with new bedding
Alas, the bed did need to go back in place and cover up some of the beautiful new accent wall. But there's no way I was putting that old bed back. Instead, I decided to update it.
I chose a pretty new Kaster upholstered bed with headboard, footboard, and side rails — something I'd never splurged on before in this room.
Then I got a new duvet cover for my down comforter, plenty of new pillows, fresh new linen sheets, and a cozy throw blanket. It's so pretty that I actually enjoy making the bed each morning, because I get to put this beauty back together.
Adding new bedside lighting
I have always wanted to have wall sconces over my bed to provide for nighttime reading light, so this bedroom makeover was the perfect opportunity to add them. I chose these simple, delicate brass wall sconces with fabric shades, and they match the transitional style of the bedroom perfectly.
Repurposing nightstands
On either side of the bed, I placed the same nightstands as before, but only after totally refinishing them! What was originally a dark cherry as seen in the "before" picture above is now a light and airy finish with modern new drawer pulls. Watch our video to see how I used Citristrip to remove the old finish and give it a new life.
AFTER: A gorgeous bedroom makeover
I can't say enough how thrilled I am with this bedroom makeover. It makes me kick myself for not doing it soon, that's for sure.
I can't decide which part I love the most. The gorgeous wallpaper in the tray ceiling has my heart because I stared at the old white ceiling for so many years.
But then that accent wall... it is the ultimate in both simplicity and luxury and makes a real statement in the room.
