When we went to Haven Conference last summer, I saw a wonderful modern art installation at the hotel that immediately made we think of the record bowls I have seen people make in the past. I decided to try my hand at melting records to make my own version of this art for my wall.

You can melt vinyl records into bowls in the oven, but I found that by using my Wagner heat gun and a dowel rod, I was able to better control the shape that the melting record took on. Using a heat gun also allows you to be more portable and work in a WELL VENTILATED area, rather than the kitchen. The fumes coming off these melting records were no joke, so I was glad I did this in the garage and not the house.

The bowl shapes looked cool already, but it was still obvious they were records.

To transform them further, I started by taping off the hole in the middle.

Then I used some ColorShot White Primer (available at Home Depot) to spray the insides and outsides of all my records.

Next, I sprayed the outsides with Marshmallow white.

When the white was dry, I flipped the bowls over and spray painted the insides with a variety of bright, fun colors.

I just used Command Strips to attach the bowls to the wall in a random pattern, and that was it!

I love how this inexpensive, modern art adds dimension and texture to my wall, as well as a fun conversation piece when guests ask what they are.

Great project! When you first said records, I wondered how you found such vibrant colors in the records. ha! But I love a more modern feel to art and having something like these records would help create a more fun wall.

I love this idea!! I’d love to see a video tutorial. Is this available on YouTube or TikTok? The oven method is slightly concerning due to the fumes you mentioned so how does this differ?

Tiffany, we don't have a video tutorial but maybe we'll make one one day! Using the heat gun instead of the oven not only gives you more control, but it gives you the ability to work outside, where fumes can blow away :)
