Make Your Own Large, Custom Party Hats
Sometimes you need a custom party hat for a special occasion, when you can't find one in the style, color, or size you want. As I mentioned previously, Mini Me has a birthday party coming up this weekend and the theme is Sandra's Boynton's Birthday Monsters!. In that book, all of the characters are wearing party hats, so I thought it was crucial for Mini Me to have a special party hat of her own. I couldn't find a store-bought version that I liked so I decided to make one.
Making your own custom party hat is super simple, and our handy-dandy party hat template makes it easy!
To use the template, just print both pages onto regular paper and cut both pieces out. Then tape them together where indicated by the arrows, to create a full pattern.
Then lay your template on a piece of 12"x12" card stock and trace around it.
Use scissors to cut out the hat shape.
Use a hole punch to put two holes near the edge of the hat (where indicated on the template), for adding string or elastic later.
Apply some double-sided tape along the length of the flap on the side of the hat. This is the portion that will overlap when you roll the cardstock into a cone shape.
Curve your paper into a cone shape and line up the bottom edges with the flap underneath then press the two edges together to adhere the tape. If you have trouble, you may find that folding the flap (as shown here) makes it easier to keep the edges lined up.
With your cones formed, you just need to tie ribbons or elastic to the holes, and your custom party hats are ready to wear. I decided to take it a step further, though, and decorate my hats to make them extra special. I used the leftover paper from making the hats to make coordinating polka dots that I attached to the hats with hot glue.
A pom pom glued to the top made the perfect accent, and also hides the small hole left at the top of the cone. Adorable!
As a final touch, I used large letter stickers to personalize my custom party hats for each party guest.

Thank you so much. the other hats I found were too small since they tried to get the whole hat on one piece of paper. I cannot wait to try this.
