The Super Bowl is coming up soon, and if my team continues to do well, I hope to be watching them on the gridiron in a couple of weeks. In anticipation, I've been looking for new football viewing party decorations. I had used some fake grass carpet (a.k.a. AstroTurf) previously when I made a football field rug and a football field table runner, so I thought I'd use it again to make some football pennants to hang on the wall so that it all coordinated.

You can find grass carpet online or at your local home improvement store. You can often buy it by the foot, which is great because you can get just as much as you need. The first thing I did was to cut the grass carpet into triangles. To make this easier, I cut a triangle out of a piece of paper and used it to trace the shape onto the back of the carpet.

Then I cut the triangles out with scissors.

The next thing to do was work on cutting some white duct tape into the shapes I needed. First, I put a piece of tape on a self-healing cutting mat and used a metal ruler and craft knife to cut a 1/4" wide strip. Then I placed that strip down the middle of the triangle.

Then I used a Cricut to cut out some yard line marker numbers out of more white duct tape.

I put the numbers on either side of the yard line, then added two more 1/4" strips on either side.

I made one pennant for each yard line that's marked on a real football field -- 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, and 10.

To attach the pennants together, I put a long piece of duct tape on the table, sticky side up. Then I put the pennants on, in order, using my paper template from before as a spacer so that they would be evenly spaced.

Once a few of them were in place, I just folded the tape over to cover the top edge of the pennants and create a sealed "ribbon" of duct tape.

I kept adding more duct tape to the end of the string, and attaching the pennants.

I just love how these DIY football field pennants came out. They will be great on the party wall, or even across the top of the food table.
